Discipline
Discipline at Kids at Heart consists of methods of guidance appropriate to the age of the children enrolled.

Guidance for Infants and Toddlers:
1. Remove tempting items that are off limits to infants/toddlers.
2. Distract (this is also called redirection) the infant/toddler away from the activity that is not desired by attracting the child with a better choice.
3. Ignore the behavior, if no one is in danger.
4. Use the word “NO” sparingly.
5. Provide duplicates of popular toys.
6. Place a toy or item in “time-out” - not an infant/toddler.

Guidance for Preschool:
1. Any of the above infant/toddler methods may be used.
2. Allow preschool children to make acceptable choices.
3. Help children to learn to solve problems.
4. Talk about the “rules” of the classroom.
5. Time-out will be used sparingly.
Physical punishment is never permitted.

As a partner in caring for your child, we stress good communication between the home and Kids at Heart, Inc. If your child is experiencing a change at home, please notify your Director. Similarly, your Director will keep you informed of any behavioral problems which may occur with your child while he or she is at Kids at Heart.

Every effort will be made to resolve problems that may occur. However, in the event that a problem cannot be resolved with a reasonable effort, Kids at Heart reserves the right to ask that you make alternative arrangements for the care of your child. See the Policy for Termination of Care included later in this handbook.
